In She Reincarnate, Sam Siciliano has incorporated Sherlock Holmes, Rider Haggard, and ancient Egyptian mythology into an adventure story. The famous detective of 221B Baker Street and his cousin, Dr. Henry Vernier, are engaged to discover the cause of the strange behavior of Miss Jane Brooke. She has suggested she may be the incarnation of a fictional character from Haggard’s famous bestselling book, She. It is a case too tempting for Holmes to ignore, and it takes him deep into Egyptology, drugs, incantations, spiritual practices, and more with the cult of Vespere Sidus. Set in London in the last decade of the life of Queen Victoria, a time of prudery and the unwrapping of ancient mummies as a dinner party entertainment, it presents a fascinating additional story, true to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Holmes' original creator.
While I was expecting a narrative starring Sherlock Holmes, I was surprised and fascinated by the inclusion of ancient Egyptian history. Sam Siciliano did a lot of research, and it added so much to the story, She Reincarnate. His characters are clearly defined, the heroes and the villains, especially Dr. Beauloup and his terrifying mother. Holmes indeed has a dislike of hypnotism, but this is in the latter part of the nineteenth century, when it was in its infancy. The London scenes are very vivid and true to life. The author describes the manners and etiquette of the times very well. We learn that Jane is forbidden from becoming an architect simply because she is female. Readers who enjoy Conan Doyle’s books, plus those by Rider Haggard, with a touch of the supernatural thrown in, will love this book, which is one of a series.
