In She Reincarnate, Sam Siciliano has incorporated Sherlock Holmes, Rider Haggard, and ancient Egyptian mythology into an adventure story. The famous detective of 221B Baker Street and his cousin, Dr. Henry Vernier, are engaged to discover the cause of the strange behavior of Miss Jane Brooke. She has suggested she may be the incarnation of a fictional character from Haggard’s famous bestselling book, She. It is a case too tempting for Holmes to ignore, and it takes him deep into Egyptology, drugs, incantations, spiritual practices, and more with the cult of Vespere Sidus. Set in London in the last decade of the life of Queen Victoria, a time of prudery and the unwrapping of ancient mummies as a dinner party entertainment, it presents a fascinating additional story, true to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Holmes' original creator.

While I was expecting a narrative starring Sherlock Holmes, I was surprised and fascinated by the inclusion of ancient Egyptian history. Sam Siciliano did a lot of research, and it added so much to the story, She Reincarnate. His characters are clearly defined, the heroes and the villains, especially Dr. Beauloup and his terrifying mother. Holmes indeed has a dislike of hypnotism, but this is in the latter part of the nineteenth century, when it was in its infancy. The London scenes are very vivid and true to life. The author describes the manners and etiquette of the times very well. We learn that Jane is forbidden from becoming an architect simply because she is female. Readers who enjoy Conan Doyle’s books, plus those by Rider Haggard, with a touch of the supernatural thrown in, will love this book, which is one of a series.

In She Reincarnate: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery by Sam Siciliano, the protagonist is Dr Henry Vernier, who investigates a mystery involving Egyptian mummies and past lives alongside Sherlock Holmes. Holmes is intrigued by the strangeness of the case and how closely it resembles a book he read. It entices him to agree to solve the case. It all starts when a man, Mr Henry Porter, visits Holmes to ask him for help after his best friend, Jane, suddenly started to behave oddly. He suspects that she is being misled and that something nefarious is at play. Someone close to Jane dies under suspicious circumstances. They must work fast to find the answers that they seek to prevent another innocent person from dying: Jane.

She Reincarnate by Sam Siciliano is a fantastically written book that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It is a page-turner and an entertaining story filled with artefacts that are beautifully described and colorful scenes. Sam is a good writer. I was impressed from start to finish and finished the book quickly. The best part for me was when Jane stopped being confused and made up her mind about what she wanted to do with her life. I enjoyed Henry’s character the most as his inability to hold back his mounting annoyance with the flamboyant antagonist, Dr Beauloup, was entertaining and amusing. I enjoyed this book immensely and heartily recommend it. Mystery readers and Sherlock Holmes fans everywhere will love this author's wonderful storytelling.

She Reincarnate by Sam Siciliano is, in essence, fan fiction, in that the author has taken a character (Sherlock Holmes) created by another author (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) and written a new mystery. Not only is this story excellent, but the author has included a few different characters of his own. Sherlock’s trusted sidekick, Dr. Watson, is replaced by Holmes’ cousin, Dr. Henry Vernier, and his wife, Michelle, also a doctor. The story revolves around Victorian London society, which was, at the time, obsessed with mysticism, magic, and spiritualism. Herbert Porter seeks Sherlock’s help to safeguard his ex-fiancée’s virtue and life from the mysterious Dr Beauloup and his secret society known as The Temple of Thoth. Sherlock and Henry discover a link to the society’s rituals and a novel by Sir Henry Rider Haggard called She, detailing an evil two-thousand-year-old Egyptian queen and the mystical powers of reincarnation.

She Reincarnate is an excellent example of what a talented author can achieve with one of literature’s most beloved characters, Sherlock Holmes. Sam Siciliano has embellished the story with his own quirks, twists, and unique characters. I particularly enjoyed the descriptions of London’s high society. Dr Beauloup’s mother, Sybil, was an absolute joy to read. She completely personified a haughty, totally batty, and yet incredibly dangerous character. The idea of basing the mystery on a novel written by a real author, Rider Haggard, alive during Sherlock’s time, was absolutely inspired. It gave an air of believability, especially with the subject matter of magic and spiritualism. Although the narrative is mainly delivered through Henry Vernier, the author changes perspectives in the odd chapters, allowing the reader to understand the motivations and actions of other characters. The author highlights the lack of concern for, especially, aristocratic women during this period. Two of the main characters, Michelle and Jane Brooke, were modern-thinking, educated, and erudite women quite capable of holding their own intellectually against any man, rather than the generally held opinion of the role of women at the time. This is a fun read and gives aficionados of Sherlock Holmes a new mystery to enjoy. I am sure Conan Doyle would approve. I highly recommend it.
