A Lovebird Named Lucy by Jaklen Alkyan is a children’s picture book about a little girl, Audrey, who brings a bird into her home. The times that they share as best friends! What might separate this from some other picture books is that Lucy and the humans can understand each other when they speak. Although it was surprising at first, it became the norm and uniquely special. Being able to understand Lucy’s thought processes gave an accurate feeling to the story. The illustrations created by Victoria Johnson are bright and seamlessly bring a life of their own to the narrative; the characters on the pages portray just the right emotion that is needed for the story. Both the illustrations and narrative meld into one another in a way that feels very symbiotic. And the story flourishes for it.

Jaklen Alkyan’s A Lovebird Named Lucy quickly took me back to my childhood as I’ve also lost a pet that somehow ended up miles away from where I lived. Readers will find an immediate connection to this book, whether they’ve experienced losing and finding a pet again or not. We all know what it’s like not seeing someone for a length of time and then being reunited with them, and the feeling that takes place is like delicate lightning bouncing around inside us. A Lovebird Named Lucy has that feeling of love and connection just as easily as Lucy soars through the air in this book. A book for all ages!
