Heart of the Wild Gods by Kendall Brooks is a sweeping, epic tale of life in a small part of the Kingdom of Wessex in the ninth century. Three years after the Battle of Edington, where the Saxons established their control over the Kingdom of Wessex from the Norse Vikings, peace is fragile. Osric, the widowed thegn of the burh of Wōdenléah, is deeply in love with the pagan healer Æfre, in direct opposition to the powerful Bishop Æthelwod. The bishop plans to expand his power base in their corner of Wessex, including finding a suitable wife for Osric, one that will consolidate his own not inconsiderable influence and wealth. He sets out to turn the local population against their beloved healer and drive her from the district. Complicating matters is the Norse trading station nearby, led by Viking Jarl Torvald Ironsight. He also has designs on Æfre’s affections and must collaborate with Osric to foil the bishop’s nefarious plans.
Heart of the Wild Gods is a powerful retelling of a period of history that is somewhat underrepresented in modern literature. This familiarity with real events and the research of author Kendall Brooks shines through on every page. I particularly appreciated the unusual aspect of Æfre’s ability to read, understand the texts of the day, and grasp and implement many of the modern concepts of medicine. This undercuts the idea of a totally uneducated and malleable populace that the church was able to dominate so effectively for centuries. The characterization is extensive, and the length of the story adds significant weight and enjoyment to the tale. I loved that the author chose to imbue the Viking Danes, especially their leadership, with an understanding and humanity that history has sometimes denied them, often portraying them all as bloodthirsty rapists, looters, and murderers. For me, Jarl Torvald was one of the standout characters. Despite his obvious attraction to Æfre, he was able to put that aside for the common good and the long-term development of the trading relationship between them and the Saxons. This is an action-packed adventure, but it still allows for the subtleties of deep characterization and a beautiful love story that transcends religions and cultures. I absolutely adored this story and look forward to more of the same from this talented author.
