I love Sam, who has real courage in a genre where females are rarely given any, and she is an excellent contrast to Honi, the elder at Vikingsholm, an antagonist who will do anything to get the miniature Wono. Readers who enjoy mythic speculative fiction and just plain great writing will love this. Very highly recommended.

What an enchanting read! A Pyramid Lake Story: Below the Surface is one of the best fantasy novels I've read recently. And what an amazing film it would make with all the scenery, smells, colors, and sounds so vividly described. I liked how Ricardo L. Ogdon transposed his fascination with mythology, philosophy, and spirituality into this marvellous fantasy, interweaving ancient myths and traditions with modern reality. I also enjoyed how the story portrayed grief, fury, fear, courage, compassion, surrender, the fragility of life, and a warrior’s feelings about war imposed on his people – so very topical. But most of all, I liked the spectacular, dramatic ending that made me long for the sequel. This wonderful story is bound to enchant fantasy fans who appreciate mythology woven with philosophical themes.

This book examines the idea that true discovery is not in running away from danger but in paying attention to the landscapes and the people we think we already know so well.
