A Rose in Plotlands is the fifth standalone novel in The Heart of Plotlands series by Dawn Knox. Rae Kinsley was nine years old when she met Jamie MacKenzie, the son of a boatyard owner near Dell Quay on the Fisbourne Channel. Despite their different family upbringings, Rae and Jamie develop a close bond of friendship that seems unshakeable until Rae is sent to boarding school and meets Bobby. Bobby is a carefree teenager with a penchant for reckless pursuits, and she inadvertently ends up causing trouble for Rae. As the years pass, Rae and Jamie renew their friendship but struggle to convey their inner feelings to each other. But after World War II breaks out, and the two take part in a dangerous rescue mission, Rae and Jamie risk never meeting each other ever again.

A Rose in Plotlands is a beautiful story about love overcoming the unforeseen obstacles of life. This captivating tale of two lovers will bring much joy to fans of historical fiction and romance. The plot is nicely paced and thoroughly engaging. Set against the backdrop of World War II, the narrative follows the lives of two youngsters from different social classes in England, covering a decade from the early 1930s to the early 1940s. The main draw of this book for me was its well-developed and multi-layered characters, not just Rae and Jamie. Even the secondary characters feel like real people with distinct personalities, and the relationship dynamics are compelling. Author Dawn Knox is a master of her craft and knows how to keep the reader invested in her characters.
