Anomalous Isle by J.L. Echelbarger is a middle-grade/YA fantasy about outcasts who find sanctuary and purpose on a secret island in another galaxy. The narrative centers on the protagonist, Dalisay, who is the only resident who was actually born on the island. She is forbidden from visiting Earth because legend believes that her crossing through the portal could destroy their world. The island’s inhabitants are known as “Anomalies” and were once mocked for their physical differences on Earth. Now they thrive in a utopian-like society filled with magical elements, sentient wildlife, and natural wonders. But when Dalisay breaks the rule and visits Earth, her actions trigger a chain of events that intertwine with a group of mistreated orphans and threaten the delicate harmony of the island.
Anomalous Isle opens by describing the atmosphere of the island, with its lush rainforests, rainbow sands, and a neon green sun. This sets a whimsical yet slightly eerie tone. The pacing is very steady, building wonder early on, then shifting to suspense. J.L. Echelbarger writes in vivid detail and with emotional depth. The lyrical prose blends well with the accessible dialogue. Dalisay is a strong, curious protagonist haunted by loss, with supporting characters like the wise elder Gomax, brave orphan Marvin, clever Juanito, and quirky circus leader Lemon all adding a level of richness. The events unfold in two realms: the magical island and mid-20th-century Earth, eventually colliding in ways that test their loyalty, courage, and self-worth. The themes become very clear: identity, belonging, grief, prejudice, and the ethics of protection versus freedom. The blend of fantasy with real-world challenges is reminiscent of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and The Mysterious Benedict Society. Fans of thoughtful, imaginative adventures with heart will find Anomalous Isle both entertaining and meaningful.
