Anomalous Isle by J.L. Echelbarger is a middle-grade/YA fantasy about outcasts who find sanctuary and purpose on a secret island in another galaxy. The narrative centers on the protagonist, Dalisay, who is the only resident who was actually born on the island. She is forbidden from visiting Earth because legend believes that her crossing through the portal could destroy their world. The island’s inhabitants are known as “Anomalies” and were once mocked for their physical differences on Earth. Now they thrive in a utopian-like society filled with magical elements, sentient wildlife, and natural wonders. But when Dalisay breaks the rule and visits Earth, her actions trigger a chain of events that intertwine with a group of mistreated orphans and threaten the delicate harmony of the island.

Anomalous Isle opens by describing the atmosphere of the island, with its lush rainforests, rainbow sands, and a neon green sun. This sets a whimsical yet slightly eerie tone. The pacing is very steady, building wonder early on, then shifting to suspense. J.L. Echelbarger writes in vivid detail and with emotional depth. The lyrical prose blends well with the accessible dialogue. Dalisay is a strong, curious protagonist haunted by loss, with supporting characters like the wise elder Gomax, brave orphan Marvin, clever Juanito, and quirky circus leader Lemon all adding a level of richness. The events unfold in two realms: the magical island and mid-20th-century Earth, eventually colliding in ways that test their loyalty, courage, and self-worth. The themes become very clear: identity, belonging, grief, prejudice, and the ethics of protection versus freedom. The blend of fantasy with real-world challenges is reminiscent of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and The Mysterious Benedict Society. Fans of thoughtful, imaginative adventures with heart will find Anomalous Isle both entertaining and meaningful.

Anomalous Isle by Jerome Echelbarger is a whimsical yet perilous young adult fantasy that invites readers into a world unlike any other. We find ourselves in a place that’s home to physically imperfect outcasts who live in peace and magic. The secluded Anomalous Isle is a refuge from Earth for such people, all except for Dalisay, its only native-born resident, who yearns to experience the world beyond. When she secretly crosses into Earth and accidentally leads a group of orphans back to the island, chaos ensues. An embittered elder forces the newcomers into a dangerous quest to retrieve a relic that could seal the portal forever. What begins as a tale of discovery soon becomes a battle for survival as ancient beasts awaken and secrets of the island’s past come to light. Mysterious, heartfelt, and full of wonder, Anomalous Isle is a celebration of difference, belonging, and bravery.

Author Jerome Echelbarger has a vivid sense of creativity naturally infused into every sentence of this story with enthusiasm, and that’s resulted in a beautifully imaginative fantasy full of heart, symbolism, and an accessible adventure for all ages. No matter what your preference in the fantasy genre is, you’ll find traditional homages and exciting new twists, with characters that are instantly lovable on the surface and incredibly deep as you get to know them more. Dalisay is an especially compelling heroine whom I loved getting to know, and her longing for freedom is the center of an emotionally rich coming-of-age journey that is well-paced so that every triumph is earned. The dialogue is realistic to ground even the most fantastical moments in relatable feelings, and this makes every setback Dalisay has even more deeply felt, balancing the whimsy of magical settings with real emotional stakes and deep themes. Overall, Anomalous Isle is a delightfully strange, thought-provoking tale that I would highly recommend.

Anomalous Isle by Jerome Echelbarger takes you to a strange, mysterious island where nothing is as it seems. Twenty-four people, all considered too ugly by society, are invited to live on Anomalous Isle. It’s a lonely place in a different galaxy, and they can only return to Earth once in a while by going through the Tree Curtain portal. Dalisay was born on the Isle and, outwardly, she is beautiful. She isn’t allowed through the portal, but one day, she goes through and kicks off a chain of events that affects everyone. Is Anomalous Isle still safe? One thing’s for sure; it’s going to take everyone to bring things back on an even keel.

Anomalous Isle by Jerome Echelberger is an incredible adventure, and clearly the product of a highly creative mind. This unique story is fantastical and imaginative, with a wonderful plot that leads you down pathways you never dreamed existed. Considering there are quite a few characters, each one is well-developed with their own personalities and defining traits, and you’ll struggle to choose your favorite; each one with resonate with you on some level. Set in the 1950s, it’s more than just a fantasy story, touching on the cruelty of not fitting in with societal expectations, but it highlights that true beauty does run deeper than what you see on the outside. It is a fast-paced, twisty story, and the ending leads you to believe that there’s more to this story – perhaps a sequel? If you love a good fantasy, you’ll enjoy this one, whether you’re a teenager or an adult.
