A Royal Craving by Elaine White tells the story of Spencer, a deaf young man who should have died in infancy, living in a world where vampires rule humans. War and conflict have turned back the clock, technology-wise. The sun has grown dimmer. Society is rather more ruthless, as we can see in regards to Spencer’s treatment. Ill at ease among his own people, Spencer eventually finds a measure of solace and comfort with Prosper, the vampire King. But as much as Spencer may need Prosper, so Prosper needs Spencer. Disfigured and thinking himself naught but a monster, Prosper has retreated from the world. Spencer infuses him with life (no pun intended), and gets Prosper to begin caring about things once more, and tending to his subjects.

This was an interesting read and not quite what I expected. I've become quite jaded in regards to vampire and werewolf novels, so the fact that this book kept my attention was a very good thing. It introduced me to some (ahem) interesting concepts, not the least of which was "mpreg." If you are unfamiliar with the term, I would suggest looking it up. The entire read had a very Japanese yaoi manga/anime feel to it. The storyline was good. I would have liked to have gone more in depth into this world. If you are a fan of paranormal drama and/or paranormal romance, you’re sure to find White’s A Royal Craving right up your alley.
