A Serpent’s Pursuit by M. P. McBride follows the life of George Abiola, also called Blos. It begins with a violent threat against his village in Nigeria and shows the events that shaped him over the years. The tale covers his childhood, where his kindness and faith stand out the most. After losing his parents in an accident, he is taken in by missionaries and later sent to live in America with his grandmother. In America, George deals with culture shock and the struggle of starting over. He makes new friends, helps people in need, and shows kindness even when his life is challenging. In the end, will his strength be enough to help him face the tribulations that are coming?
A Serpent’s Pursuit by M. P. McBride is a moving Christian coming-of-age story that mixes suspense with George’s heartfelt growth. McBride does a great job of balancing danger with George’s everyday experiences, like school, friendship, and his family life. I liked how the timeline moved back and forth because it helped me understand how George’s early losses forged the person he would grow up to become later on. McBride's prose kept me engaged from start to finish, even while portraying themes like grief and mental health issues. The supporting characters are well-developed without pulling me away from George’s compelling story. They show up at crucial moments that point to compassion, faith, and helping others from the goodness of one’s heart. Overall, it is truly a touching and inspiring tale. I recommend it to all readers.
