A Tear and a Smile by Nwanganga Shields is the story of Clint, a novice lawyer, who falls in love with Cecelia, a recent English major graduate. This is the story of young adult millennials living in the city, who fall in love and have to adjust to the hustle and bustle of city life. As such, Clint and Cece try to balance their work, family, and social lives while trying to advance their private relationship. This is a romantic story that makes you believe in the power of love, and it shows the power of two worlds colliding in some of the most unexpected circumstances.
A Tear and a Smile is an easy read. Nwanganga Shields incorporates a story and a plot line that is uncomplicated. In most instances, stories of this genre tend to involve too many characters all at once; however, Shields incorporates just enough characters into the story that have a purpose and drive the narrative forward. The romance between the two main characters is believable which leaves an impression on the reader and, as it concerns an interracial couple, it is a love story that should be read by many. I would definitely read more work by Shields in the future as she has a way of pulling on the reader’s heartstrings. The storyline is intriguing, and Shields keeps the reader hooked on every word. The author takes the notion of star-crossed lovers and spins it around. This is truly one of the most beautiful books I’ve read in a while.
