Trouble always seems to find Bethany Jarviss. Though she’s a fairly average woman working for her father in the Jarviss Family Foundation, Bethany somehow has two murder cases under her belt. But now is not the time for work or investigations as she tries to relax and spend some time with her boyfriend, Nathan. Bethany is staying at the Hartshorns’ guest ranch, a lovely retreat and Nathan’s place of employment. Alas, what happens twice, happens thrice. Though it starts as a tragic accident, the case takes a turn for the worse when evidence of foul play surfaces. The killer is very likely among them. Rita A. Popp’s The Middle of Nowhere follows Bethany as she navigates a web of lies and suspicion. No one is above scrutiny, including Nathan, who is hiding a dark past of his own.

While this is the third entry in the series, you can enjoy the novel as a newcomer. It’s a standalone story, and Rita A. Popp is great at quickly getting you up to speed on any recurring characters and elements. She’s also a master of pacing, taking her time introducing the setting and characters without rushing, then moving the investigation along with efficiency. The result is a book you can hardly put down once you get into it. I also had a lot of fun coming up with theories and confirming or denying them as I learned more about the characters; it’s one of the best parts of mysteries. There’s no shortage of secrets, hidden connections, red herrings, and fuel for speculation. Overall, The Middle of Nowhere is a treat for armchair detectives looking for some light reading.
