In Ken Breniman's A Three Body Solution, during a period of political collapse, Tâm, Chip, and TaDoo become internationally famous after presenting their committed thruple as a public alternative to fear-driven leadership and social isolation. Their rise begins with the MMMurphyBed, a futuristic invention that brings wealth and influence alongside QuBit, an emotionally responsive AI orb living inside their household. As the three reshape public life through philosophies built around intimacy and collective participation, their relationship becomes inseparable from the future direction of society itself. Decades of leadership gradually place enormous pressure upon them, especially after grief and emotional exhaustion begin altering the bond that originally united them. While humanity moves toward an uncertain future, the MMMperors become increasingly consumed by questions surrounding human evolution and survival.
Ken Breniman’s A Three Body Solution takes its title from the governing and intimate partnership formed by physician performer Tâm, caregiver philosopher Chip, and media mystic TaDoo. I would be absolutely elated if they came to one of my dinner parties. The author places everything in a future where, for example, psychedelic therapy influences education, and AI participates directly in emotional care. The author makes this society believable by harnessing his unique brand of tech to ordinary human vulnerability. Tâm is my favorite character, and I got really emotional during the memorial for Tâm’s estranged parents. A bilingual performance of “Papa” beside lotus embroidered mourning clothes is gorgeous. I love TaDoo, whose humor becomes part of his spiritual philosophy. There's even a rainbow tractor beam. Intelligently witty and flush with tongue in—er, throat?—laughs, readers who enjoy speculative fiction that finds its soul in queer futurism, altered consciousness, and emotionally centered political thought will just adore this novel. Very highly recommended.
