Yui Abe’s A Wild Windy Night is a heart-warming picture book. Ricky is nervous about the strong wind blowing outside as he goes to bed. His mother gets him into bed, but then the wind blows open the window and all of Ricky’s toys fly away in it. Ricky grabs on to keep them from leaving and finds himself picked up and carried away with them. Although Ricky learns to play with the wind, will he be able to find his way back home?

A Wild Windy Night is a good way to teach kids about the wind and how on windy nights it can come and go. Yui Abe uses simple words young children will understand. The text also uses onomatopoeia as a literary device to describe the different sounds of the wind as it is blowing. The pictures correspond well with the text. In one image, the toys are hiding in a forest and waiting for the wind to find them. This would be a good image to use to engage young readers and ask them to find the toys or ask them where they would hide. My favorite picture is when Ricky lands in the forest. He is smiling after he rode on the wind, which will help reassure children. The toy robot is riding on the toy car and the stuffed frog is grabbing onto its shoulders. The toys are familiar but unique as individual pieces. The pastel-style artwork allows us to see the wind blowing through the trees. The book is enjoyable enough to read repeatedly, even as an adult.
