Tracey Lyons Tozier introduces families to yet another tough issue using friendly characters to relay a message gently. In Abbie and Jack Are NOT Bad Dogs!, the Terrier family is confronting daily difficulties with both home and school life. Abbie and Jack are energetic pups whose struggles lead others to label them as “bad dogs.” Their overwhelmed mother, Mami Terrier, feels lost as mornings fall apart and homework goes missing. With gentle guidance from Mama Bulldog, Mami makes an appointment with the family vet, who advises her on what may be causing the pups’ challenges. The school community steps in to help the family. As the pups begin to thrive, Mami has time to focus on her problems. When they realize that the problems each family member is experiencing are related, they all begin therapy. Together, they build a calmer and happier home. In the end, Mami and the teachers see the pups differently. The pups were never “bad.” They just needed understanding and support to be their best.
Abbie and Jack Are NOT Bad Dogs! Mama Bulldog Tackles ADHD by Tracey Lyons Tozier is an emotionally warm and validating read that left me feeling hopeful and deeply moved. The author turns a real ADHD struggle into a gentle and empowering story. She captures all the steps that families experience from recognition to diagnosis and treatment. Jenifer Novak’s illustrations elevate every moment. The pups’ expressions are captured realistically on every page. For children who are visual learners, Novak’s artistry will be a high point for their comprehension. The art and storytelling work together to provide a gentle and safe space for families navigating ADHD. The book is relatable for adults with a child with this diagnosis. It’s especially meaningful for anyone hoping to help children feel understood and seen, not labeled and overlooked. Kudos to Tozier and Novak for delivering such an important resource.
