A short life full of tragedy will be granted to some while others will enjoy a long and happy life. After Midnight is the story first of Maria, a young woman who, because of the war, meets the man of her dreams. They fall in love and when he leaves her it is to be only for a short time. But events happen quickly and there are many things the lovers cannot control. Their daughter, however, will not have an uneventful life either. As Simone comes to adulthood, she will experience things no one would imagine and yet she will also experience some of the happiest times anyone has ever known.
The heights of happiness and love and the depths of despair are all encompassed in this story of women who love and lose, who find happiness and experience tragedy. This story will have you, by turns, smiling and mourning. I enjoyed this book immensely because the characters seemed so real you could almost picture them beside you and the events they survive are not only intriguing but incredibly well written as well. After Midnight by Henriette Daulton is definitely a love story and one that will not fade quietly into the night just like the women who created this story and the men they love. This is perfect for any lover of adventure and romance, with a realistic plot line that keeps you guessing at every turn. Nothing is ever as easy as it seems for Simone and her mother throughout this book.
