Afterworld is a work of fiction in the fantasy, action, and adventure subgenres. It is suitable for the general reading audience and was penned by Bryan McBee. Set in a vision of the future where a new dark age took over humanity and a new species arrived to fight humans for domination of the natural world, the book follows our protagonist Simon Crandall as he flees for safety after learning a deadly truth that was supposed to stay secret. As Simon races from enemy factions on all sides to find the weapon for which he has found the key, the fate of the world rests on his shoulders.

I was quickly awed by the well-considered and intriguing lore of this book which twisted the vision of humanity’s future to one where our poor choices were paid for with destruction and an unimaginable dark age. Bryan McBee’s worldbuilding is exquisite and serves as a perfect backdrop to a thrilling tale of survival and intrigue. Protagonist Simon’s life amongst the ruins explodes upon his discovery of a secret that puts him in deadly crosshairs just for knowing it. I enjoyed Simon’s characterization which made him feel like a natural product of his unnatural environment. Afterworld establishes itself as a dark fantasy that is not to be missed, with its original and deadly world, exciting and dynamic tale of fighting for survival, and deep characterization of its protagonist. All of these elements are bound together with electric prose that brings the whole experience to life on the page and creates an unmissable story.
