"Alien Advantage" uses a clever ploy – this is a story about aliens in which there are no aliens! The main thrust of this book is the notion that, instead of refuting the tales of alien abduction, the US Government actually “collects” those who have been abducted and secrets them away on a protected military base. The alien captors have given all “returnees” an ability to use their minds in new ways such as telepathy or telekinesis, but have wiped the memory of their abduction. The authorities view this expanded use of the mind as the returnees’ “alien advantage” and believe they must be “protected” from themselves and the outside world. Mark Hemmings is one such returnee, but with a difference – he has been taught, by his alien captors, how to control a spaceship, using only his thoughts. Mark escapes, steals the alien ship and crashes it back to earth, but, with his memory intact. At this point, he is “collected” by the authorities and his fate is determined by two powerful men – Dr Nathan Montgomery, chief psychologist, and General Peerless, the Air Force commander of the base. The returnee's “treatment” is the basis for much conflict between Mark and these two influential figures who view him as a prize possession who must never be allowed to return to his normal life.
This is a well-written and entertaining book and the interaction of the characters is handled sensitively. The three main protagonists constantly seek ways to “win” at the expense of all others - the Doctor through drugs and manipulation, the General through brute force and Mark through a strong desire for revenge and natural justice for all the other returnees. The final scene is somewhat predictable but it brings the book to a satisfying conclusion. Well worth the read.
