Ravensmoor: The First Hunger is a thrilling supernatural horror novel by Samuel Riding. It's the summer of 1848 in the town of Ravensmoor, Yorkshire. The ground beneath the church's graveyard has unexpectedly opened up and revealed a hidden chamber of ancient secrets. On the orders of the curate, his assistant, Julian Thorne, investigates the chamber. He comes across a mysterious lead box. Inside the box, he finds a black iron needle and a ledger book. Julian had no idea that an ancient evil had once again been awakened in Ravensmoor. The Weaver's threads begin to sew the very essence of the townsfolk into Ravensmoor itself, leaving their bodies as hollow shells. Now, along with his cousin Silas, a blacksmith, Julian must fend off the First Hunger. Can he save the people of Ravensmoor from the clutches of its threads?

Samuel Riding has crafted a gripping horror story with gothic aesthetics and existential themes. The setting is the first thing that you will notice about this novel. The dread-filled atmosphere drew me in from the very first page, as the worldbuilding is simply fantastic. Tension and intrigue lace every page, and the mystery-packed plot keeps you hooked all the way through. The stakes keep you on edge in every single chapter, and you find yourself hoping the protagonists make it out alive by the end. Julian thinks logically, while his cousin Silas is quick-tempered. It causes a lot of friction between the two. But I really enjoyed their confrontations and found it really interesting that they still worked together so well. The slow reveal of Ravensmoor's past and the First Hunger will take most readers by surprise. Horror fans will love Ravensmoor: The First Hunger.
