When Bella returns home to St. Christopher under the guise of caring for her mother’s store while Izzie recovers from a broken leg, nothing in her hometown has changed. The little town of St. Christopher is the same in its small town propensity for gossip and community spirit. Bella’s mother still refuses to be referred to as “Mom” in lieu of her surname. Izzie’s best friend, Sarah, carries on the tradition of producer and director of the town’s annual Christmas play. And high school beau Jake still holds the key to Bella’s heart. Acting as her mother’s replacement in the annual play, Bella is plotted in a role opposite her old high school flame, who is busy trying to solve the mysterious rash of town arsons. The security of small town living is as disturbed by this atypical violence as the thumping of Bella’s heart every time Jake is in the room.
Sharon McGregor’s gift of storytelling is evident in this charming novella length tale. With all of the elements of a standard formula romance, All’s Fair in Love and Arson does not disappoint the reader with its mix of light-hearted dialogue and “feel good” commentary. Although the outcome is easily predicted, McGregor has included a humorous take on Agatha Christie’s literary icon Hercule Poirot, lifting it a notch above the typical romance. The author masterfully compacts a possibly much longer tale into the size of an easily one-sitting read, without the risk of cheating the reader of essential detail.
