Talking to children about cancer can be a complex task. There’s a lot to explain, and it needs to be done gently. To help us with this, Fei Zheng-Ward shares Brave Like Me: Understanding Cancer. She begins by explaining what cells are and how they help our bodies grow and heal. A normal cell knows when to stop, but some cells don’t stop growing and multiplying, and when they make too many copies of themselves, cancer develops. Once this basis is established, she approaches the topic from a broader perspective, explaining that medical professionals help the body heal. She also describes treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery, adding other useful information for young readers.
I loved how Fei Zheng-Ward makes a difficult topic accessible to children. She provides practical information using clear language and an easy-to-follow narrative, while also addressing an important emotional aspect. She explains things that can really help children better understand the situation, such as the fact that cancer isn’t contagious and isn’t anyone’s fault. She says that it’s natural for children to experience strong emotions like sadness or confusion, but they’re not alone, and remembering that can give them strength. I also liked that she shares suggestions for activities a child can do in the recovery process, such as listening to music, drawing, or reading a book. Also, I found the illustrations charming because their soft colors evoke moments of calm. Brave Like Me: Understanding Cancer will help children feel more confident and secure during their medical journey.
