Alyssa's Wishes is the second book in A Michaels Middle School Story series by Susan Read. While making good grades and assuring her teachers everything is all right in her home life, Alyssa is making wishes for a change in her circumstances. Though her dad loves her, the things he embraces for comfort push Alyssa into a corner of the living room and keep them from enjoying a healthy relationship with friends and family. Alyssa doesn't want to upset the balance her father has created for himself, but she puts all her heart into a wish on the eleventh day of the eleventh month at 11:11. She waits for her wish to come true and researches puppy mills and rescue shelters, hoping for a dog of her own. Her life changes suddenly, and she wonders if her wishes have destroyed her family.
Get ready to blow the seeds off a dandelion with Alyssa as Susan L. Read relays the middle schooler's thoughts. Some readers may relate to Alyssa in one way or another, whether they have an absent parent, a family member with a mental illness, or they simply want a dog. Whether they picked up the book to dive into Alyssa's story or to learn more about Alyssa's project about puppy mills, Read's book will give readers a comfortable place to examine certain social issues without overwhelming them. Read's dedication to rescue dogs shines through on every page, as she includes the names of real rescue dogs in her home and community. Alyssa's Wishes is a beautifully written story that will grab the hearts of readers and, hopefully, inspire them to learn more about rescue animals.
