An Explorer’s Guide to Ferocious Dragons by H.A. Harper is a charming foray into an adventure that will bring children’s imagination to life. This delightful book is perfect for future explorers with a dragon guide told from the perspective of a draconologist. Within these pages is a compilation of the dragons encountered during Dr. Apollo St. George’s adventures which inspired a delightful field guide that children can take with them on their epic journeys. This book is ideal for young children.

The visual appearance has the aesthetic of old paper to give the feeling of a true field guide with sketches, paintings, and photos incorporated. These elements create a scrapbook appearance that is visually appealing and eye-catching with bright colors and adorable dragons. The guide is organized by type of dragon with the majority of them reflective of their powers or environment - hypnodrags, firegazers, desert skins, ice claws, galaxy wings, and light whips. Each dragon is unique with the focus of the book being on how to identify the different types. This is a fun replica of a wildlife guide with a fantastical twist that grounds these magical creatures in reality while treating each of the dragons as an individual character. The different groups are broken down into character profiles such as Boltz who has bolts of lightning between her horns, Nebula who creates portals, and Dune who can fly under the sand. Each character is one that children will enjoy as they are delightful, dangerous, and empowering.

Children will have so much fun learning about these dragons and their abilities which include breathing mist so cold can turn fire into ice, blasts of light, and shining like the sun. The dragon illustrations are colored to represent what they stand for such as firegazers being red and fiery seeming, ice claws being blue, and galaxy wings being dark and gold. The designs are elegant with vivid details and textures that create stunning images. Other illustrations by H.A. Harper include sketches that bring the scrapbook element to life. An Explorer’s Guide to Ferocious Dragons is an epic field guide told from the perspective of a draconologist and with an assortment of dragons children will find fun, engaging, and will push them to use their imaginations.
