In An Unbalanced Force by Valerie Sherrard, readers are introduced to the family of Ethan Granger. He is a typical high school student enjoying the lucrative and privileged lifestyle provided by his father and mother. All is well until the last time his father tells him he’s going out of town for business. Ethan catches his dad in a lie, which leads him on the path to discovering the truth. From sneaking into his father’s office and files, hiring a private detective, and following him on business trips, he has to become a liar and evade his father's suspicion. Using every trick his father has taught him, will Ethan be able to expose his dad and change his life of luxury and comfort?
What's more terrifying than facing reality? Valerie Sherrard chilled me to the core in An Unbalanced Force. I experienced so much empathy for Ethan as he was forced to navigate his decision about his father. There was so much at stake that most high schoolers do not have to consider at all. I was on the edge of my seat every step of the way, hoping he would not be discovered. The author did an amazing job of creating a story that leaves the reader thinking about what they would do if it were their family, friend, or loved one. Do the means justify the end? The author highlights the social issue of getting scammed. Readers who love action, suspense, and drama will enjoy this book.
