Angel’s Fall by Daniel McKenny is an intriguing read. The preface assures us that the story will ultimately have a happy ending. However, this is only the first book in the Angel’s Blood Series, so there is still a long, interesting journey before the end. From chapter one, the angel of death is established as a girl who is not defined by her task to guide humans to the afterlife. She feels obligated to do this job, but she longs to do something else with her life. An assignment twenty years prior to the main events of this story greatly affected her life’s trajectory. So, when she is told to work at the coffee shop where Sam works, she hesitates to take on the task. She knows him, but he would not remember her. What history do they have together?
I enjoyed reading Angel’s Fall. Daniel McKenny does an amazing job of setting up an interesting character-driven plot. Annie, the angel of death, is an endearing protagonist. I feel that I can trust her as a narrator, and she is genuinely funny. Her humor transforms some lore details from exposition to memorable moments. Sam is also a reliable narrator and a charming character. I like that he can rationalize his emotions. All the characters are very well-developed. I think the pacing helped me form an emotional connection with the characters before the stakes were raised. Despite knowing the story has a happy ending, there were a few plot twists that made me want to read on and find out what happens next. I highly recommend this novel to everyone.
