In Angry Little Artist by Michelle Mae, Gabi Grizzly is drawing a special picture for her grandpa when her brother bumps her arm, ruining the artwork. Frustrated, she scribbles furiously, prompting Grandpa to offer a new sketchbook to express her anger. As she continues to draw her emotions, Grandpa helps her see calming images within the chaotic lines, like a warm blanket or a sky full of stars. The next day, after another conflict with her brother, Gabi turns again to drawing and then helps him manage his anger using a sketchbook. They toss ripped pieces like glitter, transforming frustration into play. That night, Grandpa shows Gabi his calming drawing methods and teaches her a breathing exercise. Gabi ends the day drawing once more, embracing her role as a calm little artist.
Angry Little Artist, written by Michelle Mae and illustrated by Alana Beall, is a thoughtful and beautifully executed look at the balance of emotion and creative expression. The writing is clear, accessible, and gently layered, and we get a very organic portrayal of how anger can feel and the ways we can channel it positively. Beall's artwork is absolutely gorgeous, with watercolor-style illustrations rendered in a soft palette of pastels with well-placed touches of jewel tones. The art complements the tone of Mae's writing perfectly. What I love is that the book doesn’t just deliver a message, it gives our youngest readers real tools for managing big feelings with creativity, ingenuity, and imagination. This is an excellent read for families and classrooms looking to spark conversations about emotional awareness and self-soothing. Very highly recommended.
