Apex by Robert Parker is a thrilling tale of survival, conspiracy and suspense. It is the second book in the Ben Bracken series. Protagonist Ben Bracken is a rough, tough figure with a tainted past, an ex-army captain who seeks to continue serving his country, despite some rather unsavoury deeds not so long ago. Now working independently to bring down criminals and threats to the nation of Great Britain, Ben returns to the south of England just in time to be involved in a whole new assignment. When he escapes the local authority’s clutches with a precious, dangerous cargo, there begins a thrilling race against time for Ben to figure out what he’s carrying and who his real enemy is.
Apex continues the tale of Ben Bracken, but gives you plenty of information on his previous exploits if, like me, you haven’t read the previous book. Ben is a fully-formed character with a charming, dry narrative that endears him instantly to readers. Fans of James Bond and Jason Bourne are sure to enjoy his technical know-how and military experience, especially in the inventive ways that it is used throughout the story. Robert Parker brings further depth to the action genre with the introduction of Amina, a genuinely likeable and strong female side character who isn’t just there to make the hero look good. As a female reader, I was thoroughly impressed to find a woman of such emotion, strength and morality in a story of this nature. The overall conclusion to the book was also a stark surprise, making this one of the most intriguing action thrillers I have ever read.
