Asleep Ever After by Carol E. Ayer is a captivating mystery set in StoryWorld, a children's literature theme park. The story follows Ashling Cleary, the park’s owner and manager, as she navigates the chaos that ensues after the murder of Hollywood star Katrina Irvine during a performance. What begins as a seemingly straightforward investigation quickly spirals into a complex web of secrets, motives, and danger. Ayer does an excellent job of planting clues and red herrings, leading to a satisfying and unexpected resolution. Ashling is a compelling protagonist, and her determination to clear her best friend Donna and Donna's husband Charlie, who are wrongfully suspected of the crime, drives the plot forward.
Carol E. Ayer blends the whimsical charm of a storybook park with the darker elements of a murder mystery. The setting is vividly described, and the juxtaposition of the park’s innocence with the sinister events unfolding within its gates adds intrigue to the narrative. While the book is primarily a mystery, it also explores themes of friendship, grief, and redemption. Ashling's journey to overcome her fears and open her heart to love again adds an emotional dimension. Her evolving relationship with Scott, the assistant location scout, is handled with sensitivity and provides a hopeful counterpoint to the darker aspects of the plot. Asleep Ever After is an engaging read that combines the charm of a fairytale with the intrigue of a murder mystery. Ayer's writing is crisp, making it easy to visualize the world she has created.
