Bear in the Dragon’s Shadow by Donald E. Patterson is a geopolitical thriller that blends strategy, deception, and high-stakes action. The novel follows Matt Scales, a former DEVGRU operator turned Defense Clandestine Services (DCS) agent, as he leads a team of elite operatives against a looming global threat orchestrated by Russian and Chinese forces. The book excels in its portrayal of the characters, particularly Scales and his team. Each member is vividly drawn, from the tech-savvy Chin Ho to the fearless April Knight, whose personal and professional connections add depth to the story. The camaraderie and banter among the team provide moments of levity, helping to balance the tension of their dangerous missions.

The action sequences are meticulously detailed, whether it’s a firefight in the forests of Taiwan or a high-altitude parachute jump into hostile territory. Donald E. Patterson’s background in emergency management and law enforcement shines through in the realism of these scenes, making them both thrilling and believable. Bear in the Dragon’s Shadow offers an exploration of the broader implications of modern conflict. The author skillfully examines the intersection of technology, global politics, and human resilience, making the story both thought-provoking and entertaining. The inclusion of real-world elements, such as cyber vulnerabilities and shifting alliances, adds authenticity that heightens the stakes. This is a must-read for fans of military thrillers and espionage fiction. Patterson’s ability to combine action, strategy, and emotional depth makes this novel a standout in the genre. It’s a story that’s a movie in the making.

Bear in the Dragon’s Shadow: Where Deception Meets Strategy by Donald E. Patterson is a gripping military thriller that places readers squarely in the middle of a geopolitical powder keg. We're with black-ops operative Matt Scales, who embarks on what should be a routine capture mission in Ukraine. Things go spectacularly wrong with one teammate dead, a war criminal unaccounted for, and a broader conspiracy quietly unfolding. As the mission’s failure begins to expose a far deeper threat, Scales uncovers a coordinated cyber-warfare campaign waged silently by Russia and China. With devastating precision, Patterson builds a world where battlefield lines extend into diplomacy, digital sabotage, and media manipulation. As the clock ticks down on global stability, Scales must navigate a war without uniforms, a world without certainty, and a mission that grows murkier the closer he gets to the truth.

Author Donald E. Patterson has a keen sense of timing and tension, and he writes with impressive command of military procedure and international stakes that make for a tightly woven narrative that feels frighteningly possible. The suspense is expertly paced, with moments of quiet calculation punctuated by sudden bursts of violence or betrayal, and the dialogue holds that seriousness that you need to really sell the high stakes of every moment of the mission. Patterson also captures all the complex elements of modern warfare, where data and misinformation are weapons that are just as lethal as bullets. Scales is an engaging lead: cool under pressure but pushed to his psychological limits. The supporting characters are fleshed out with just enough detail to ground the personal amid the political. Overall, Bear in the Dragon’s Shadow is a smart, edge-of-your-seat thriller that confronts the future of global conflict with chilling clarity, and I would not hesitate to recommend it.

Bear in the Dragon’s Shadow by Donald E. Patterson follows the perilous career of Matt Scales, a team leader for a covert US Army division. After a compromised mission, the loss of a good friend, and a life-changing injury, Matt travels to Santa Barbara and seriously considers hanging up his gun permanently, until an old school friend and gifted scientist calls him with a problem. Russian operatives have banded together with their Chinese counterparts and planned a devastating cyberattack on America’s power grid. With the team’s most detested adversary leading the attack, Matt digs deep to get back into the game. But the conspiracy reaches further than anyone expected, and innocent victims will suffer, both in the US and abroad. Worst of all, the enemy isn’t only outside the gate but might be hiding in plain sight. Matt and his crew have one chance to prevent an international catastrophe and avenge a fallen hero.

I enjoyed how Donald E. Patterson displays his extensive research on tactical situations and shows a refreshing confidence with technical linguistics, including cybersecurity and the operation of law enforcement organizations. The premise is terrifyingly realistic and plausible amid today’s global calamity. I found the theme of responsibility to be a constant thread in Bear in the Dragon’s Shadow, balancing the actions of both the heroes and the hostiles. Each character operates from beneath a weight of responsibility, for family, for friends, for country, and for self. I loved the realistic descriptions, which added authenticity. A favorite line is, ‘He hated tunnels. Always had. They felt alive and hungry.’ The plot circles constantly, moving fast enough to take your breath away, and the intriguing twist at the end will leave you wanting more of these addictive characters. Patterson knows how to craft an action-packed military thriller that readers will love.

Bear in the Dragon's Shadow: Where Deception Meets Strategy by Donald E. Patterson is a terrorist thriller that had me sitting on the edge of my seat until the end. The story follows Matt Scales, an ex-elite operator now a covert asset, on a high-stakes mission in Ukraine to capture a Russian war criminal. The operation descends into chaos, resulting in a team member's death and leaving Scales to question the supposed demise of their target. As political boundaries blur and allegiances fracture, a more insidious plot emerges, extending from Eastern Europe's battlefields to America's digital infrastructure. With Chinese and Russian forces orchestrating a coordinated "silent war," the threat transcends military conflict, becoming existential.

Author Donald E. Patterson's incredible mystery entertained me until the end. I was mesmerized and hooked. I wanted to know where Lebedev was after the initial mission had failed. The plot had layers upon layers of mystery that I had a grand time solving. There was never a moment when I was able to guess what would happen next, and I think that is a testament to how great a writer Mr. Patterson is. I loved Matt Scales. He is a compelling protagonist who was haunted by the mission's failure and forced to navigate a dangerous landscape of shifting loyalties and blurred political lines. I loved how he was portrayed as a human with flaws and faults, but a person who tried his best. Matt didn’t make miracles happen; he was coldly strategic about the mission because he was determined to find out what truly happened. Bear in the Dragon's Shadow is exciting and almost cinematic. I highly recommend it!

Bear in the Dragon’s Shadow by Donald E. Patterson follows Matt Scales, tasked with capturing Alexei Lebedev, a Russian military officer wanted for war crimes who has launched a hybrid warfare campaign against the United States. After a failed operation in Ukraine, where Lebedev escapes and is presumed dead, he resurfaces in Moscow, under the Russian Minister of Energy. Assigned to coordinate covert cyber and sabotage attacks alongside Chinese operatives, Lebedev targets critical U.S. infrastructure. Back in America, Matt reconnects with April Knight as local attacks linked to Russian operatives escalate. With the help of a physicist and a team of highly skilled operatives, Matt uncovers a sleeper malware hidden in Chinese-made transformers capable of causing widespread blackouts. The team races against time to thwart Lebedev’s coordinated assault on U.S. soil, blending espionage, cyber warfare, and international alliances. “The mission ends, but it doesn’t leave you. It echoes in quiet moments, especially the ones that were supposed to bring peace.”

Donald E. Patterson’s Bear in the Dragon’s Shadow is a fantastic thriller, with polished writing that brings together a diverse cast of characters and a wild ride around the globe. I found the integration of multiple agencies, such as the NSA, FBI, and even the local sheriff’s office, goes a long way in the juggling of bureaucracy, procedural detail, and differing priorities, which hammer home the realism of what such an undertaking would look like. These extend to trust, and Patterson gives every character distinct motivations and perspectives, from Decker’s skepticism about Chin’s genius and Matt’s fierce defense of him, to April's lingering questions over Matt's decisions in Afghanistan, and everyone's trust that St. Bernard will slip a pun in at every opportunity. The greatest testament to Patterson's skill as a writer is in the contrast and irony used, juxtaposing scenes like the peaceful imagery of crickets chirping and temple bells ringing before, moments later, the whole scene turns deadly. Overall, this is a great, action-packed, heart-stopping thriller. Very highly recommended.
