When Henry Jekyll, a doctor in London, awakens in a morgue, he reels in disbelief that he is still alive as memories of what had transpired earlier slowly settle into his disoriented mind. Not long ago, he had been a wanted man on serious charges. To escape his dilemma, he had taken cyanide and had no idea how he was still alive. He escapes from the morgue, intent on meeting his lawyer, whom he hopes will clear his name. However, he unwittingly runs into his late mentor's family. Soon, he learns of their plight. Dr. Falstaff, Dr. Denman’s arrogant nephew, had robbed them of their estate. As Dr. Jekyll sets out to fix his situation and find justice for the family, he finds himself at odds with a monster, one that is eating him from within. Can he escape it? Find out in Assumptions by A. A. Sekhon.

A. A. Sekhon unfolds the story through deliberate prose, maintaining a thin line between reality and imagination. This gave the story a complex quality. The vivid depictions of the scenes took me back to Victorian-era London, from scuffles on the cold, gritty streets to the high society balls and parties. The story highlights the disparity between the rich and the poor. The poor lived in a constant struggle for survival, with each dawn presenting a challenge to stay alive. In a world where secrets, gossip, and lies can break or change lives, Dr. Jekyll conceals a huge secret, and so does his adversary. He must find a way to use his adversary to his advantage, before his own secret ruins him. Lovers of historical mystery thrillers blended with suspense, psychological thrills, and a splash of drama will find Assumptions an enthralling read.
