Autonomously Yours is K. N. Parker’s science fiction account of the development of an artificial human named Sally, made to be indistinguishable from an actual female and adjustable in its physical attributes. Set in the year 2116, Doctor Harold Okamura has been contracted by a powerful businessman named Jerrald Axell to construct Sally, with a view to tapping into the lucrative escort market. Axell sees Sally as the ultimate compandroid capable of fulfilling any specific demands made by clients without subsequent consequences, in spite of the fact that her development has been done outside of the laws governing android construction. In Axell’s world, powerful people know how to play outside of the law. Once Sally is completed, Axell and Okamura follow closely her testing with various clients through video feeds, leading to a cumulative experience that will deal a devastating blow to their plans.
K. N. Parker’s Autonomously Yours was an interesting read, delving into some of the darker aspects of humanity and contrasting these with the emerging characteristics of artificial life in development. The interplay between Doctor Okamura and Cran was particularly engaging as they shared in the horrific journey of compliance undertaken by Sally. Relating Sally physically back to Doctor Okamura’s deceased wife was a deft touch, opening a whole raft of emotional experiences that may not otherwise have surfaced. The personalities of the characters were real and believable and may be a portent of things to come for the human race. Be warned, however, there are explicit scenes of violence and deviant sexual behavior.
