The war of 1812 was a lost cause nearly from the start, and yet both sides valiantly chose to push forward and fight for their own desires. There were reasons on all sides, though none was a strong enough reason to give one side an edge to achieve victory. But that didn’t mean that each person fighting didn’t have their own cause. Men like Lemuel, fighting as revenge for the loss of his family, or like Lieutenant Sherbourne, looking for honor of his own, or even Silas, determined to share in a victory. Each has their own reason for fighting, and each will need to find their own level of success before it’s all over in Backlash: A War of 1812 Novel by Mike Klaassen.

War is an extremely difficult thing for anyone to comprehend if they haven’t been there. But it’s something that these characters all face in their own way and from their own side of things. This book really makes you feel like you’re right there with them, sharing in the glory and the fear at the same time. No matter what the history books may tell you, there’s no happiness to be found in fighting a war, and each of the people throughout this book is determined to win; for themselves, for their loved ones and for their future. Backlash by Mike Klaassen is definitely a story of adventure. It helps you see both sides of the fight and what everyone is really fighting for. It’s not what their country is telling them to fight for, at least, that’s not the main reason they continue to pick up their guns.
