Becoming a Mom: An IVF Story by Liz Jauvtis chronicles the author’s deeply moving journey into motherhood. After being a babysitter to a single mother in her teen years, Liz decided she also wanted to be a mother someday. However, she did not expect to struggle with infertility. What started as irregular menstruation quickly turned into a misdiagnosed cyst, which was later discovered to be a twisted fallopian tube during surgery. This made her fear gynecological check-ups and led to a long period of her pursuing academia and not focusing on her fertility. When she finally found a partner and was ready to have children, all her fears returned as she was having trouble conceiving. She and her partner did their research and tried different medications. The author talks about her experiences in sharing with friends and family about IVF treatment, getting pregnant, becoming a mother during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the various aspects of life that came with this change.

Becoming a Mom is a touching and educational read that highlights the medical and emotional challenges of infertility and the complexities of modern motherhood. It offers information that you may not have thought of, like the different types of IVF options, the pros and cons of being pregnant at the same time as a friend, and even phone addiction as a mother. Liz Jauvtis points out the lessons she has learned through babysitting and being a mother. She explains how motherhood is unique and a process of continuous growth and development. This is an excellent lesson for many others who seem to be under pressure, comparing themselves to other parents in terms of parenting styles. What I liked most was the honesty of the writer and the way she simplifies complicated terminology used in the health sector. This book covers issues such as her worries of miscarriages, societal pressure, stigma, and other challenges related to conception and parenthood. Even though this mainly focuses on motherhood, I believe it can also be beneficial to men who wish to understand their partners. This is a much-needed read, and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking answers, comfort, and honest advice during their journey to becoming a parent.
