Behind the Lies is a corporate mystery thriller by Maren Cooper. Will Franklin is the COO of one of America's most prominent biotech companies, BioteKem, being groomed by the legendary Chet Sutherland to take over the mantle of CEO. But Will's life turns upside down when Chet unexpectedly declares that he is about to be fired and leaves him with a cryptic message. Soon after their shocking encounter, Chet suffers a severe stroke that puts him in the ICU. Determined to find out the reason behind Chet's words, Will sets out to retrieve information from Chet's phone and laptop. Meanwhile, the biotech industry's rising star Bella Davis drives a wedge between Will and his wife Charlotte and draws the SEC's unwanted attention to BioteKem. With Will's professional career and marriage on the line, can he come through these circumstances unscathed?
Maren Cooper combines a smooth blend of mystery and intrigue with a healthy dose of family drama in this absorbing thriller that may remind readers of hit corporate TV shows like Mad Men or Suits. Cooper employs a slow-burn narrative that expands with each passing page as the mystery unfolds one layer at a time. The characters are complex, with inner conflicts and agendas that dictate their actions and motives. Chet's presence looms large over the other characters despite being physically absent for almost the entirety of the book. I found myself thoroughly invested in Will and Charlotte's relationship, especially after a couple of reveals. Behind the Lies is an enthralling corporate drama novel.
