Being Me: Lucy's Tale (Shark Stories) by Traci Swain is a compelling story about a shark who deals with bullying. The main character Lucy is a Great White shark. She struggles with a disability and for this, she is relentlessly tormented. This book is a great way of introducing coping mechanisms to young children. It provides them with an array of options that teach them how to address their feelings. Lucy faces constant bullying from Bobby the Bull Shark. She is mocked for having a twisted floppy tail. After being challenged by Bobby to beat him in the school competition, Lucy prepares herself in more ways than one. She gets ready for the challenge by navigating her negative feelings and improves her physical, mental, and emotional state to better her chances of winning.
Traci Swain does a phenomenal job of writing about a sensitive topic, bullying. In Being Me, we witness Lucy being bullied for something she cannot change; a disability. Instead, Lucy shows us how to deal with this issue by practicing different coping mechanisms. The book deals with compelling themes such as emotional well-being, negative feelings, and bullying. Traci effortlessly introduces these themes to the young reader. Her writing style has a rhyming scheme that will keep even the youngest reader entertained while including interesting facts about sea creatures. This story beautifully encapsulates difficult topics that serve as a lesson to younger readers or listeners, and a is a reminder to older readers to always be kind not only to others but also to yourself.
