Sherry Christie’s Amber Road is set along Rome’s Danube frontier during Caligula’s reign. Marcus Licinius Carinna is living as Marcus Aquilo in the provincial town of Carnuntum after his father’s attack on the emperor changes his standing in Rome. Marcus is waiting for Aurima, a Marcomanni priestess he loves, who returned to her people north of the Danube months earlier and never arrived for their planned reunion. His opportunity to search for her comes when Aelius Lamia, acting prefect of the Praetorian Guard’s Special Cohort, recruits him for a mission to meet Vannius, king of the Marcomanni and Quadi tribes. As Marcus joins the Roman detachment traveling along the Amber Road, he enters territory where imperial diplomacy depends on Germanic leaders whose family obligations can alter the course of Rome’s plans.
Sherry Christie’s Amber Road is an outstanding historical novel, with period details breathing life into the first-century Danube frontier. Marcus is fascinating, and Christie develops him into a fully fleshed-out Roman whose devotion to his 'familia' is palpable. His dry humor works beautifully throughout the book, especially in exchanges with people whose customs differ from his Roman upbringing. Christie shines in making the frontier a character in its own right, from Vannaz’s half-built Roman-style house in Bruna to Grozhauga’s feast hall, where massive antler racks hang from soot-darkened rafters. Intelligently written and completely immersive. Readers who enjoy the intricacies of historical fiction, with the humanity only a skilled writer can weave throughout, will adore this book.
