Beneath Dark Skies by John Greystone is a sci-fi tale centered around a small town in Sky Valley, Montana. Many years prior, Earth's Elite class left the planet to inhabit the stars. Presently, Earth is a shadow of the planet it once was. Yet, the world managed to press on, regressing into a semi dystopian-like environment. Caleb, the main character, is tasked with dropping off supplies to a bitter old hermit named Shane, who lives on the outskirts of the town. Shane introduces Caleb to the hope of life and unknown wonders beyond their planet. One day, when a strange egg-shaped capsule unexpectedly crashes in a field, Caleb goes to investigate the site. Praxis, the man inside the craft, tells Caleb he is an Elite offspring. More shockingly, other Elite offspring are on their way to Earth to seize the planet as their own. How will the town respond to this new threat?
John Greystone's Beneath Dark Skies is an exciting, well-conceived science fiction novel, teeming with unexpected plot twists, intrigue, suspense, and romance. A major aspect is its well-crafted characters. I love Caleb and Badger's playful, brotherly bond, which adds depth to their friendship. Greystone skillfully narrates the story using present events, intricately incorporated with memories from Caleb's past. These memories are stepping stones to help readers bridge the gaps between Caleb's formative years, his connection to his parents, and their family dynamics. This intermingling of past and present events is what makes Caleb a compelling and relatable protagonist. They also make his character growth throughout the novel central to the story's success. The supporting characters are equally captivating, delivering a tapestry of personalities that enhances the overall plot. The careful attention to detail is laudable, immersing readers in the intricacies of the world. Sci-fi fans will enjoy this book.
