In the summer of 1968, Beryl Christian moves to New York City after graduating from Smith College, taking a position at Larkin Enterprises, in Roberta A. Grimes's Jack In Love. There she meets Jack Richardson, the company's wealthy young owner, whose fortune has left him isolated from ordinary friendships. After an encounter at Jack's penthouse prompts Beryl to resign, he persuades her to return as his personal assistant under a contract that keeps their relationship platonic. Over the following two years, their friendship develops into a romance that leads Jack to plan their marriage. He envisions Beryl beside him as he takes responsibility for his inherited business empire, while she hopes to attend law school. As their wedding approaches, Jack's expectations for their future begin to conflict with Beryl's own professional ambitions.
Roberta A. Grimes delivers an affecting romance in Jack In Love, giving Beryl Christian a spirited voice that makes her private thoughts feel wonderfully familiar. Jack Richardson’s autism is part of his individual experience, and the easy rhythm of their teasing conversations makes their affection entirely believable. Their attraction develops gradually into frank sensuality, while their different expectations of marriage give even the tenderest moments a bittersweet quality. The author makes those differences tangible through her beautiful descriptions of the homes they share, each suggesting another way their life together might look. At Kennewick, Jack’s Virginia estate, they share supper in a kitchen lit by an oil lamp, with dark green fields beyond the house. At Sea Haven, his Connecticut mansion, his mother’s rose-pink sitting room has a Monet beside a Renoir amid gilded furnishings. Well written and carefully constructed, readers who enjoy intimate, literary love stories will adore this.
