Set in the near future, Betrayal is the first book in The Vulture Effect series by Simone Parker. An organization called the Coalition is planning on releasing a deadly virus in hopes of reshaping society. The story follows Sierra, a nineteen-year-old survivor who was betrayed by her own father. Constantly fighting against the Coalition, Sierra is on the run and trying her best to save others from the same fate as herself. On the other hand, we have Kai, who is on a mission by the Coalition to assassinate Sierra. The organization has Kai’s younger sister held as a captive, and if Kai can eliminate Sierra, they will release her. However, things change dramatically when their paths cross. Neither is ready for the impact the other will have on their lives. With tough decisions to make, can Kai and Sierra survive through it all?

Author Simone Parker created an incredible world where everything is possible. The worldbuilding was tremendous, and so was the character development. I loved both Sierra and Kai. Sierra is a fantastic protagonist. She is smart, resilient, and a hard worker. She knew things were not fine, and they wouldn’t get better unless someone took a stance. Sierra accepted being that person, even if it put her in danger. Kai, on the other hand, made me feel bad for him. His hands were tied because he was desperate to protect his sister and was ready to do whatever it took to get her out of the hands of the Coalition. Sierra and Kai's connection felt real, their feelings made them second-guess everything (especially Kai), and they really wanted to give in. This is just the start of the series, and already I cannot wait to see what happens next!
