Jeremy Melton’s Revisionist History follows Los Angeles homicide detective Jason Riley after his grandfather leaves him a silver pocket watch and files connecting famous unsolved crimes. When Jason uses the watch to travel to 1947 and witness the discovery of Elizabeth Short’s body, he finds another watch at the scene and attracts Mara James, an agent from the Temporal Enforcement Division. Mara believes the Revisionists are moving through history to alter events before returning to a future that no longer remembers what changed. Jason is soon crossing centuries beside her, trying to protect people whose survival shaped the world while working out why one hidden leader wants history rewritten. Every jump gives them one chance because once a changed moment seals, there is no way back to the version they lost.
Jeremy Melton’s Revisionist History is brilliant time travel science fiction, written with historical intelligence that makes every premise feel exciting. Melton places readers in 1424 Domrémy, where Jason must reach a thirteen-year-old Joan of Arc before the Revisionists arrive. The mission carries a sense of discovery that made me want to follow every turn. The missing Confederate treasury becomes another inspired example of Melton’s imagination, transforming a historical mystery into money that can be spent centuries later. My favorite part is the Council of Carthage, where Melton makes the formation of the biblical canon a race across centuries as Jason carries one document that may decide what millions read as scripture. Jason is wonderfully likable, while Mara’s knowledge of time still leaves room for surprise. Revisionist History is wildly entertaining science fiction shaped by an inventive mind. This is pure reading pleasure.
