Between Goodbye and Hello is the story of two people, Melody and Harrison, who can’t help but judge each other based on past events. The small, coastal town of Alinta Bay is their hometown, and Melody returns, much to the chagrin of Harrison. He doesn’t trust her based on her so-called weirdness from the past and one wrong act, but the truth is that Melody’s just had a hard life, and she’s come home for a fresh start. Iris Blobel has created a wonderful set of characters in addition to several memorable side characters. Harrison is difficult to like at the start of this story; he comes across as judgmental, so it’s a steep climb to warm up to him. But the more we get to see the new, more mature version of Melody, we also get to see a different side of Harrison.
Iris Blobel has done a wonderful job of bringing the coastal town of Alinta Bay to life. The place is really a character in its own right, with a town full of incredible people willing to help Melody when she really needs them. Melody is my favorite part of this story because she’s lost so much, been cast out twice, and still she persists, determined to live her life to the fullest no matter what. Between Goodbye and Hello is well-written with vivid imagery that provides the perfect backdrop for Melody and Harrison’s story. One of the best parts of this story is how much they clearly dislike each other but are oblivious to how attracted they are to one another. It made every interaction more entertaining and emotional.
