It started with a note. A simple request. Nothing unusual for a high school student to be asked to a party. Unless he had never been asked before. So, when Chase found the note in his locker, his suspicions lit up. Shellinger’s. Friday. 10 PM. The last time he had been invited to Jake Shellinger’s house for a get-together his entire world had crashed in on him, leaving him an orphan and physically scarred for life. So, the fact that he even considered the request baffled him. Until he and Evie were assigned to be project partners in literature class. Suddenly the possibility of finally being accepted into the popular movement of students raised hope in Chase’s heart. To be anywhere with Evie was a dream come true. So what if her enthusiasm was only at the expense of earning a high score on the project. So what if working in close proximity with her earned him the wrath of Shane, the vile and arrogant boyfriend. It was a class assignment. It was totally innocent. Or was it? Why was Chase invited to this party?

Jennifer Murgia’s tale of improbable love is just the reality fix that many teen readers need. Between These Lines is a tightly written story that explores the unlikely match of popularity and invisibility. When Chase and Evie cross the social barriers that set them apart, they reveal the truths often overlooked in an attempt to meet expectations in young culture. I truly loved this story. This is a brilliant example of good young adult fiction.
