Beyond Impact by June V. Bourgo is the first book in the Salish Sea Mysteries series, and it starts right after Willow Danes graduates from college. She is kidnapped from her condo on Vancouver Island by men targeting someone close to her. The abduction goes wrong when Willow tries to escape, and the van collides with a cybercrime analyst, Campbell Bailey, who has a near-death experience, caught between death and life. Campbell discovers the accident has unleashed supernatural powers, and she can use her psychic abilities to guide Willow in her desperate escape. The connection between the two is extraordinary. Meanwhile, Willow’s uncle, Lawson Ward, is forced to do a covert operation in London with the CSIS. The story moves forward with a revelation about family and a surprise about Campbell and Willow that is hard to see coming.

Beyond Impact was masterful, a story that I devoured in one night. The storytelling was exceptional, and the author captivated me with the prose, the vivid descriptions, and the clever blend of metaphysical elements with the tension of a well-crafted thriller. The author created a complex relationship between Campbell and Willow that shone through the story, and it crystallized the suspense. I kept turning the pages as I wanted to know why they share that unique connection. The revelations were timely and deliberate, and the effect was a well-calculated surprise that I never saw coming. June V. Bourgo creates characters that are engaging, complex, and rooted in real human experience. The tension of the kidnapping is paired with the dreamlike, ethereal quality of out-of-body experiences to entice readers. This book ticked all the boxes for me.
