We all have those moments when we don’t feel valued, we don’t feel like anyone is noticing us. It’s a difficult feeling and can make us feel sad. This is what happens to Billy Dipper, the brilliant star in Olaolu Ogunyemi’s Billy Dipper’s Time to Shine. With the Starliday celestial festivities coming up, everyone is cheering on Billy’s star as the brightest and the fastest. But there’s another star that wants attention. Bully Betelgeuse wants to be noticed and he’s insanely jealous of all the attention Billy’s receiving. So, he sets out to make things difficult for Billy, to the point where Billy becomes the target of intense bullying. The previously happy little star, Billy is now very sad and just wants to fade away. Then, he hears a cry for help and he knows he’s the only one who can save the star that’s sinking into a black hole.

Olaolu Ogunyemi’s picture book, Billy Dipper’s Time to Shine, is a sweet story about self-worth and believing in yourself. Told in rhyming verse, this bedtime story is shared with a young boy, Wade. The father is telling the story about Billy Dipper with such finesse that Wade is amazed and enthralled and wants to know how his father can tell this story with such passion. Dad admits that he was once in Billy Dipper’s position, feeling unworthy and useless. That’s when Wade has his own “Wow” moment, realizing that his father is prone to the same emotions that others experience, regardless of age. As well as learning the importance of accepting ourselves and realizing that we are all valuable in the grand scheme of things, this story shares some interesting facts about the night sky and the stars that shine brightly. The end of the book has some interesting details about astronomy and astronomical terms. A great read!
