Blood Bond by Alicia Ryan is a vampire novel with a bit of a difference. Roxanna Collins is a singer in Vegas. She doesn’t have many friends and she doesn’t want them. She isn’t happy about her life but feels that she has little choice in her career path – until she wakes up in the middle of the night to find herself in Victorian England! She has been brought there by Andrew for Darren, who thinks that he and Roxanne would be a good match. Prepared to make the most of what has happened, she gets a job in a gentleman’s club as a singer, the first club of its kind to have a singer, and sets about shaking things up. The pianist Phillip is a sensible sort of chap, but Roxanne works on hanging that while the allure of Darren could be too much for her to fight. Which should she choose – the dark or the light?
Blood Bond by Alicia Ryan was a little slow to begin with but once it picked up, it really took off. It wasn’t a dark novel like many vampire stories are; it had its moments of light and amusement. It’s a different look at vampires, a bit more light hearted with a touch of erotica thrown in for good measure. I liked the way the modern melded with the vintage and, overall, I have to say I enjoyed the story. The characters were exceptionally well developed, each one standing out as a person on their own as well as blending into the story – that adds more depth to a story I think, when you can identify with the characters on an individual basis. Enjoyable book, and I look forward to reading more from Ms. Ryan.
