Blue Ink by Molly Riggs is a boldly told, character-driven story that follows the relationship between two sophisticated, broken characters. Charlie has experienced trauma as a child and writing seems to be the one thing that helps him connect with himself and the world around him. He is a kind of recluse, but Levi, outgoing and gutsy, can’t let Charlie be from the moment they first met on campus. Determined to connect deeply with Charlie, he explores every avenue to get Charlie to open up. When Levi discovers that one of the traumas of Charlie’s past is linked to the loss of a brother to addiction, Levi knows his own life is in trouble. Can he handle his addiction and win Charlie’s affection?
Blue Ink is a well-written story with strong mature themes exploring trauma, addiction, and sexuality. The characters are deeply and genuinely flawed and the author succeeds in creating a dazzling tapestry of their broken, inner worlds. Levi is persistent in his quest to develop a strong relationship with Charlie and as they dare to step into each other’s world, the walls they have built begin to crumble. Molly Riggs has a gift for creating relatable characters, crafting scenes that feel like real life to readers, and writing humanity into the characters. The author’s strong prose anchors this cleverly plotted original story on solid ground. Raw emotions are honestly written and it is worth noting again that this novel is meant for a mature audience. Love and pain coexist in this narrative in a way that is addictive. You won’t find one without the other, and this element of the story creates the realism that permeates the writing. You’ll care about the characters Riggs has created and find it difficult to ignore the pull toward their chaotic worlds.
