Bluebirds Don't Cry is a work of fiction in the thriller, suspense, and conspiracy subgenres. It is intended for the adult reading audience owing to scenes of graphic violence and those of a sexual nature, as well as explicit language throughout. Penned by author Shannon Sheets, in this highly engaging work of mind games and emotional reconciliation, we meet protagonist Melissa Wellington when she seeks a fresh start in Hawaii, away from the trauma of her youth. But when she meets a vagabond lady named Maggie, who has also suffered abuse, and then Maggie goes missing, Melissa is propelled into a secretive world she never imagined could even exist.
This was one of those stories that started out slowly, laying breadcrumbs on a trail and an outcome I couldn’t predict. I was so engrossed and surprised at so many points that it kept the tension level going throughout the reading experience. Author Shannon Sheets balances the shocking and upsetting aspects of the novel extremely well against the intrigue and mystery of the conspiracy plot so that we get a well-rounded and heartfelt tale and a thrilling storyline that complements the emotional qualities of the work. Melissa is a strong but vulnerable protagonist who has a keen sense of justice and determination that readers will easily get behind. Her whole journey was so relatable from start to finish. Overall, if you’re looking for a high-quality drama that’s packed with suspense, look no further than Bluebirds Don't Cry.
