Born of Empire is the first book of S A Melia's Dodecahedral Space Empire series. All Guy Erma wants is to join the prestigious Dome Militant order as a soldier and use his swordmanship skills to serve the kingdom of Earth. However, growing up as an orphan in the Domeside, Guy lacks the registration papers to enlist in the Dome Militant. Meanwhile, Prince Teodor's sixteenth birthday couldn't have come at a worse time. With his father and younger brother assassinated, Teodor unwittingly becomes the sole heir to the throne of Earth and the Dodecahedral Empire. After forging an unexpected bond with Princess Nuria Valvanchi of the Zaracan Empire, Teodor is kidnapped and embroiled in the midst of an insidious conspiracy orchestrated by a couple of nefarious, power-hungry men. Guy discovers Teodor's plight. But can Guy help him?

With an intricately crafted plot and a cast of lively characters, author S A Melia delivers an engrossing sci-fi novel packed with action, drama, and political intrigue. Born of Empire is a tale of survival and inheritance. It's a riveting story that offers everything young adult readers want in a sci-fi novel. Melia's worldbuilding is truly stellar. The lore behind Teodor's family heritage is fascinating, and so is the mystery behind Guy's parentage. There are also unique creatures featured in this novel, such as cy-wolves and gorans that sci-fi readers are bound to love. But what truly captivated me were the well-developed characters, their intertwined storylines, and the dynamic relationships that propelled the larger narrative. Guy, Teodor, Nuria, Sayginn, and Karl are all compelling characters with their own agency. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and I'm eagerly looking forward to reading the sequels.

As the insurgency on Sas Darona rages on with no end, rumors abound that the natives are getting military support from the Dodecahedral Empire. Still, no one can prove this until Karl Valvanchi stumbles on irrefutable evidence. He prepares to visit the administrative center of this conglomerate of planets to present his find, but events on Earth have overtaken his mission as the heir to the throne disappears barely days before his coming of age. With the Emperor keen on who will succeed him and the regent barely maintaining her influence, expect sparks to fly as the Dome question nears in Sally Ann Melia's 13 Born Of Empire.

The first book in the Dodecahedral series is an explosive introduction to a world of intergalactic politics. Sally Ann Melia's storyline is expansive as she takes her time to introduce us to each of the principal players, their origin stories, and their motivations in this action and adventure offering. The characters are impressively multifaceted, exuding emotion in their conversations that immerse us completely. Her descriptions of the planets are colorful and exciting as she mixes folklore, fiction, and history to create a futuristic-sounding Earth that is as believable as impressive. Guy Erma's struggle to attain his heart's desire is an interesting subplot but probably not as intriguing as the gunboat diplomacy the Dodecahedral Empire attempts with the Zaracan Democratic Union. Sally Ann Melia's 13 Born Of Empire combines elements of action, adventure, drama, and intrigue to create a science fiction fan's dream novel.

Born of Empire by Sally Ann Melia follows Guy Erma, a teen orphan with no records, name, or rights. Nevertheless, he has incredible blade skills and big dreams of joining the prominent Dome Militant, the military division of Earth and its empire. Guy trains every day, hoping to turn his dream into a reality. Meanwhile, inside lavish dwellings, Prince Teodor—the heir of Earth and the 12-planet Dodecahedral—bears his family's legacy, expectations, and loss. When Teodor is kidnapped during a charity event, Guy discovers how far the elite will go to claim power for themselves. Guy wants to help Teodor, but every choice pulls him deeper into dangerous political agendas, where he eventually learns that his heroes may not be honorable after all. As Guy and Teodor struggle to survive their ordeal, they are challenged to embrace their true destinies.

Sally Ann Melia's Born of Empire is a mesmerizing science fiction tale masterfully blended with action, adventure, and an unforgettable coming-of-age journey. At the heart of this story is the class divide. Guy Erma possesses valuable skills and ambition, but as an unregistered orphan, he’s rendered socially invisible. Watching him swing blades in a cramped attic, while dreaming of joining the Dome Militant, makes him a protagonist to root for. Then there’s Prince Teodor. He’s born into wealth and status, yet he's overwhelmed by his personal insecurities and social expectations. He and Guy are paired together skillfully, having gone through their fair share of adversity while gradually growing into the young men they are both meant to become. Guy and Teodor are two sides of the same coin—one youth is on the outside looking in, while the other is on the inside looking out, yet both crave control over their lives. An awesome story overall! Fans of sci-fi novels mixed with political intrigue will savor this narrative.
