Boss of the Bathroom is a humorous coming of age novel for children and preteens written by Christina Rauh Fishburne. Emily just couldn’t take her brother’s antics sometimes; he was just too much of the worst things that a little brother could be. While they were only three years apart age-wise, the yawning chasm between the fifth-grade and the second-grade mentalities was all too pronounced for her She just couldn’t understand why he needed to spend hours in the bathroom while she stewed outside the door, waiting for him to finish. Worst of all, their parents would invariably take his side and activate the “Precious Baby Child Shield” that meant he could do no wrong, and she was cast in the role of the bad guy. But even that shield had its limitations, such as when Billy decided that admission to the bathroom was by reservation only, including for his father. There were limits. Still, Emily would do just about anything to help her little brother out of a jam, and he did find himself in those quite often.

Christina Rauh Fishburne’s humorous coming of age novel for children and preteens, Boss of the Bathroom, is a hilarious look at growing up, which becomes even more complicated by friction between siblings and the fact that they are both in the same school. Emily and Billy’s anecdotal adventures feel genuine, and the relationship between them is a credible one. I had to laugh over the Billy plays sick episode and loved the chapter where the family goes on their traditional hunt for a Christmas tree. Fishburne’s writing style is smooth and easy, and her storytelling, while geared for children, will delight anyone who still remembers being young. Boss of the Bathroom is recommended.
