Brave Belle Saves the Day was inspired by her own little Yorkipoo, whose bold battle with a broom reminded her that bravery comes in all sizes. Brave Belle Saves the Day by Cindy J. Vanous is a charming children's picture book about a tiny dog with the heart of a lion. Belle is a cute, playful, and brave pup that can fit into one's hand. She has just joined the Holliday family and already knows she belongs there. Belle's size can fool anyone into thinking she's harmless. Yet, she's on a serious mission. Belle is very protective of everything. Her job is to protect the Holliday house at all costs. But from whom or what? What about the family's cat or the broom that stands still and silent in the corner? When the broom starts moving like it's alive, Belle's suspicions are confirmed. The broom is trouble. Thus, she must fight and defeat it. Can Belle protect her home?

There is so much to love about Brave Belle Saves the Day by Cindy J. Vanous. The story is engaging and lyrical, with many humorous moments, making it highly enjoyable to read aloud. The vintage-inspired illustrations by Texas artist William "Bubba" Flint, which center on Belle, are so adorable and well done that they will surely put a smile on every young reader's face. There are also themes of courage, family, and belonging beautifully integrated. The messages of being brave to protect loved ones and not to judge someone by appearances prove to young readers that the size of one's heart matters more than one's physical size. Dog lovers of all ages everywhere can follow a little hero who inspires courage and determination.

Vanous’ descriptions invite the senses to come alive and play along with Belle as she demonstrates her bravery. ‘She spins like confetti in the breeze’ is one of those wonderful descriptions. Belle has appointed herself the savior of the Holliday family, and save them she will, even if that means confronting the broom head-on, to show that she is indeed the heroine. In Belle’s mind, ‘She isn’t just guarding a house. She’s protecting her home.’

From the very first page, Belle captures children’s hearts with her delicate form, contrasting her ferocious will to protect. At the end of it all, Belle weighs up her choices and has a rest in the laundry basket. The illustrations are vibrant and expressive, the perfect accompaniment to the story’s tone, adding visual delight that keeps young readers engaged.
