The Pirate's Daughter by Jodie Leigh Murray is set in 18th-century London, where Livie Blackwood lives under the name Olivia Thornton in aristocratic society under the protection of her aunt and uncle. Behind that identity, she secretly gathers intelligence about illicit shipping activity and passes it through contacts connected to her father, Elias Blackwood, a vanished privateer whose reputation overshadows her life. When Grayson Valle arrives, searching for the man he blames for his brother’s death, his investigation draws him toward Livie and the secrets she guards. As pressure mounts from a nobleman determined to force her into marriage, Livie leaves London aboard Grayson’s ship, believing she has secured her freedom. Instead, she becomes the center of his plan to find Elias Blackwood. Their voyage carries them across the Atlantic while each attempts to control the outcome of a pursuit that began long before they met.

Alternating between the first-person points of view of both Livie and Grayson, Jodie Leigh Murray lets readers into the hearts and secrets of two fantastic leads in The Pirate's Daughter. The story drips with authentic period details, dancing between whispers in a lavish ballroom, to recording cannon damage in a ship's log once the smoke of battle has settled. Livie is a powerhouse, and I absolutely love her as a character. She climbs a rigging to secure a loose sail in a violent storm and fires pistols from the deck. She definitely meets her match in Grayson, who's not afraid to toss someone overboard. I went in with a very different idea of what Livie's relationship with her father would be like, and Murray surprised me with more than just an ancillary brush. You never know what you're going to get with the captain of a boat called The Executioner, but Elias is such a fascinating character. Well written and with room for more adventures to come, let's hope Murray expands this gem of a story into a series. Recommended.

The Pirate’s Daughter by Jodie Leigh Murray is a fast-paced romance set on the high seas when privateers, with Letters of Marque, and out-and-out pirates ruled the waves. Livie Blackwood’s life changed forever when her pirate father banished her from his ship, following the death of her mother. Young Livie’s crime was to fall in love with a common sailor aboard the ship. She was sent to London, to her aunt and uncle, to be educated as a society lady and to ultimately be matched with a suitable gentleman in marriage. Livie hated the boring dances, the endless, mindless chatter of the other girls her age, but most of all, she dreaded the prospect of marrying a man as old as her father. She longed to return to the sea. When Captain Grayson Valle caught her attention at yet another ball, she was both attracted and intrigued by this man of mystery from France. Little did she know Grayson’s interest in her was as much about revenge as it was about his undeniable attraction to the beautiful Livie.

The Pirate’s Daughter is not only a wonderful romance with twists, turns, and unexpected bumps in the road to true romance, but it is also a pirate adventure with swashbuckling action and excitement. Jodie Leigh Murray has created a delightfully nuanced character in Livie Blackwood. Although she is well trained in the art of sailing, fighting, and the rough and tumble of life at sea, she also has a delightfully naïve and sweet side to her that longs for love, passion, and a true life partner. This contrast gives the story depth and wonderful character development and makes it stand out from others in the genre. What impressed me most was this author's ability to cram so much action, character development, and romance into a relatively short novel. Her writing style is concise, direct, and to the point. There are no long-winded, wasted paragraphs; it is crisp and relevant, always taking the reader on a journey. Secondary to the obvious romance, the interesting sub-plot explores the complicated and dysfunctional relationship between Livie and her father, Elias, which adds interest. This is an excellent book for lovers of historical fiction, romance, and exciting pirate adventures. I was completely caught up in the intricacies of this story. I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend it.

In The Pirate's Daughter by Jodie Leigh Murray, Livie Blackwood lives a double life. She is immersed in London’s high society while having deep roots in a criminal underworld, helping her pirate father, Elias. She is forced into an engagement with Baron Percival, a master manipulator who blackmails her. But then Captain Grayson Valle comes into the picture, and his eyes are set on Livie. He is irresistible, smart, and seems to easily perceive Livie’s double life. But his intentions are beyond a mere romantic connection. Believing that Elias killed his brother, he intends to use Livie to draw her father out and have his revenge. The story gets complicated when Grayson meets Elias, and revelations lead to an even greater danger, an enemy that threatens both Elias and Grayson.

Jodie Leigh Murray has delivered a spellbinding story that captivated me with its suspense. I enjoyed the multiple perspectives, and the first-person narrative voice keeps you guessing, wondering what happens next. The dialogues enthralled me, and I enjoyed the drama that built up through each page. The Pirate's Daughter features well-constructed conflict. I wanted to see what happens between Grayson and Livie and longed for them to be together. The relationship between Livie and Percival is complex, with explosive moments. The author kept me reading, eager to see what would happen when Grayson met Elias. The setting is meticulously rendered, and I enjoyed the scenes in the ballrooms as well as the dangers of the open sea. This fast-paced, cleverly plotted story has the tenderness you expect in a well-crafted romance and the action that underpins sea battles. It is an exciting read.
