Dr. Fei Zheng-Ward’s Brave Like Me helps families understand the routine of Type 1 Diabetes in a very comforting way. It follows a child learning how the human body uses glucose, how insulin works like a set of helpful keys, and how that gives us the energy to move, function, run, and jump. The pages cover wellness routines, breaking down what it means to check your blood sugar or to use small pumps and tiny shots to get insulin. By making it clear that this illness isn’t contagious, it actually removes the shame or isolation that children might face after visiting the doctor. Can children with Type 1 Diabetes handle these health tasks and still enjoy the carefree fun of growing up? I truly believe so. In fact, reading this book provides exactly the kind of gentle encouragement families need right now.
Brave Like Me by Dr. Fei Zheng-Ward is a reassuring children’s picture book that shows how much a strong support system matters. It’s a wonderful book for young readers because it shows a healthy lifestyle shift as a positive journey using caring, simple language they can easily follow. The gentle wording makes the daily habits easy to grasp so kids don’t get overwhelmed while reading. This sense of safety is beautifully supported by the friendly artwork from Buttercup Studio, which fills the pages with smiling helpers and kind friends. Highlighting the signs of high and low blood sugar gives children a great vocabulary to explain their physical needs to an adult. It shows that needing extra health steps does not mean losing out on childhood fun. This engaging children’s book is a great reminder that health challenges never define how big a child can dream. Very highly recommended.
